Welcome to Book Reviews with Roshni! Aaj hum baat karne wale hain ek aisi kitaab ki jo mere bookshelf par kafi dino se apni baari ka intezaar kar rahi thi—There Are Rivers in the Sky by Elif Shafak [1]. Jaisa ki hum book lovers jaante hain, hum kitabein nahi chunte, kitabein humein chunti hain. Aur jab is kitaab ne mujhe chuna, toh isne mujhe ek aisi duniya mein pohochaya jo waqt, bhugol, aur itihaas ki simaon se pare hai.
If you are a fan of Elif Shafak’s previous works like The 40 Rules of Love and The Architect's Apprentice, you already know the magic she weaves. Released in August 2024, There Are Rivers in the Sky is a sweeping, emotionally resonant piece of Historical Fiction that proves yet again why Shafak is one of the most important literary voices of our generation. The Premise: One Drop of Water, Three Intertwined Destinies On the surface, the story is incredibly simple. It is the journey of a single drop of water. But through this one drop, Elif Shafak connects three distinct timelines, three diverse characters, and three different worlds so effortlessly that you won't even realize how you finished this 450+ page mammoth of a novel.
Timeline 1: Ancient Nineveh (630 BC) The story starts in the ancient city of Nineveh in Mesopotamia (modern-day Mosul, Iraq). A single drop of rain falls on the head of King Ashurbanipal. He is no ordinary king; he is a ruthless, powerful ruler who built the greatest library of the ancient world to preserve science, literature, and the Epic of Gilgamesh. Yet, he is the same king who slaughtered minorities, shed rivers of blood, and even burned his own guru alive out of paranoia. The duality of his character sets the stage for the novel's exploration of human civilization.
Timeline 2: Victorian London (19th Century) Centuries later, the exact same drop of water, now frozen into a snowflake, lands in the mouth of a newborn baby named Arthur Smyth. Born in the foul, mud-caked banks of the River Thames to a violently alcoholic father and a mentally ill mother, Arthur's life is defined by poverty. But Arthur has a superpower: an eidetic memory. This brilliant memory pulls him out of the slums, lands him an apprenticeship at a printing press, and eventually leads him to decode the ancient tablets of Nineveh. Trivia: Elif Shafak actually based Arthur's character on the real-life 19th-century Assyriologist George Smith, using his actual diary entries to craft Arthur's journey!
Timeline 3: The Modern Era (2014 & 2018) In 2014, we meet Narin, a 10-year-old Yazidi girl living by the River Tigris. She suffers from a rare disease that is slowly making her deaf. Her grandmother wishes to baptize her in their ancestral lands, but the rise of ISIS brings brutal genocide, threatening their lives, their culture, and their history. Shafak handles Yazidi history and their persecution with haunting sensitivity.
Fast forward to London in 2018, we meet Zaleekhah, a hydrologist living on a houseboat on the Thames. Recently divorced, orphaned at a young age, and battling severe depression and suicidal thoughts, Zaleekhah is disconnected from her roots.
Why You MUST Read This Book This is not a story with a traditional "happily ever after," but it is deeply realistic and satisfying. Arthur's story is a testament to how passion—not just hard work—creates brilliance, even if his fate ends tragically by a drop of contaminated water. Narin’s rescue by funds raised by Zaleekhah and Nen ties the modern narratives together in a beautiful bow of female solidarity.
If you are a socially, emotionally, and intellectually aware citizen, you cannot afford to miss There Are Rivers in the Sky. It is a masterclass in deep character development, historical research, and empathetic storytelling.
